New Race Car shocks

At the last round of the Vic State race Championships at PI a fortnight ago, I had a quick race car (check my avatar, is not the Z34) - indeed the best it has been for over 10 years, but I could not get the car to turn left for love nor money.  Since PI is a LH turning circuit, this was costing me lap-time in T2, T3, T6 (Siberia), T9 (Lukey Heights), T11 and T12 onto the straight, so arguably this is going to be 2 or 3 tenths for each corner .... add that up, and it somewhere between 1.2 and 1.8 seconds per lap ... all because of a dud shock !!

We changed the roll centre height atd the rear, sway bars front and rear and nothing helped, so I suspected a dead or malfunctioning shocker.

The shocks were dyno'd last week and sure enough the RH front shock was just about dead, so replacements were required.

Ric Kemp at Race Technique Engineering came up with a shock package based on the Penske Double-Adjustable 7500 series but being the knowledgeable bloke he is, I got the speed sensitive shaft out of the 3-way shocks and a custom built shim-stack that gives me a bit of the hi/low speed bump and adjustable rebound from the 3-way, but without the canister ... it is not the full-monty 3-way but these things are light and the shock dyno curve gives a broad range of adjustment fr bump and rebound.

Pic attached.

Cannot wait to get the old girl out onto the track again .... looking for a sub 1,40s now .... Porka's - look out !

Nice write up!

(It feels like the shocks on my wife's Mazda3 have also past their "use by" date at 108k)

They sure are pretty! Winton two weekends ago my car wasn't turning right, suspected crap alignment as I'd been messing with ride heights a bit before. Took it into get aligned the next week and sure enough 7mm toe out on the left, hahaha, oops!

Was good to see it at PI, sounded great. We were looking after a Sports Sedan and HQ on the day.

All good, hit the steering lock with a small hammer, took two goes, then pushed starter button, was able to get it into ACC mode, pulled the steering lock fuse, started car and got the hell out of the Nissan workshop! The look on their faces was priceless.
