Ipad Head Unit 350Z

Finally had the time to start on something thats been on my mind for quite a long time. Being a big apple iphone/ipad user, i knew i had to get this done to my car. So over the week i pulled out my dash and then grabbed a hand saw and really hoped for the best result. Attached are pics of how it turned out. I'm quite impressed of how it all fits in so perfectly into the factory dash and how it turned out to look. The factory dash didnt require any difficult adjustments but to simply just cut the middle bar that seperates the stock radio headunit and storage box. The main work was to create the housing and front bezel. The way i have designed it was to intentionally have the ipad slide in the charging dock when i enter the car and when im leaving the car i can simply slide it out and take it with me. Literally just takes 1 second to slide in or out. The housing that allows the ipad to rest on is made out of wood and fiberglass while the front bezel that stops it from falling forward is made purely out fo fiberglass. Hiding behind the ipad is a kenwood kdcu5dt headunit (really does improve sound quaility compared to the standard radio unit). This headunit features a full compatible ipad connection dock which allows me to play audio and charge the ipad at the same time. Can also stream audio through bluetooth which is handy when my passengers wants to use the ipad in their hands.

I have seen your work before I made mine and seen some more samples from soundmanaudio on YouTube. Was really considering doing the ipad mini but since I already own a ipad 2, I might as well just use it.

The kenwood headunit is a single din and only required to push it back a few cms. I left a gap on the housing so I can still access the headunit. Similar to the video below. At the end you see him take ipad out and use the headunit.

Use the glove compartment, I have my Ipad in the plastic tray under the glove board and just fiberglassed a holder for it. Conceeled and easy to get to. (I only use mine for music)

Looks sweet mate!

Samsung 10.5" - google Brainiac software then Shapeways 3D who make a plastic holder to put into your 350z - looks great

Still looking for the speaker amp in the boot though to connect sound - using an external bluetooth speaker at the moment

    • Insurance for under 25s?
      By Breezy · Posted
I just bought an 04 350z and have now found out that most insurance companies don't cover drivers under 25? Im 20 years old and get my full license in about 2 months. Could anybody here give me some advice or recommendations for insurance companies that will cover me?

      Welcome Dave!!!

How are you finding your Nismo so far?
Did you pick it up new or 2nd hand?

      Cheers,
      Matt
    • Replaced clock spring - now steering angle sensor problem
      By ThatZeeGuy · Posted
      Hey Paul,

Not sure if I have the answer to this but it does seem like a very peculiar sequence of events.
Was this issue happening at all (that you noticed) prior to changing the clock spring?

This may be a process whereby you may need to re-trace your steps to ensure that all connections are plugged in correctly and that nothing has accidentally disconnected or become loose behind the dash.

I hope that you are able to find some sort of solution.

      Cheers,
      Matt
    • Unsure if bad coil / cylinder not firing?
      By ThatZeeGuy · Posted
      Hey Brendon.

This does seem to have a miss-fire, which could be causes by the Coil Pack. I remember for our old 350, the Rocker Cover leaked slightly, causing a small amount of oil to seep into the coil channel. This caused the rubber seal around the Spark Plug to expand, which was enough to cause spark issues.

This is not uncommon and the best way to ensure that that is the problem, see if you can track down a good coil to test out, maybe even borrow 1 from a fellow member. If that fixes the problem, then you will know that
      1) It is your coil pack and
      2) that you will need to replace the rocker cover gasket on that side to stop the leak.

I hope that this helps you out!
